The Sunday we will be celebrating the “Gospel of the Green Thumb” following the scripture of Matthew 13:1-9 and 24-43. Andy has a slightly different take on the parable of the scattered seed – you will find it interesting. Laura Kester will be singing the offertory in the 8:20 and 10:50 services.
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells the so-called “Parable of the Sower.” But maybe we could think about it as the “Parable of the Soil.” Truly the Divine Sower is at work, spreading seed in unexpected places, all of the cracks and crevices of our lives, the nasty nooks and crannies way back where we never look anymore.
And things happen to those seeds along the way. Some are snatched away just as they hit the ground; some sprout but do not take root; some grow among weeds that drain energy and nutrients and so they die. But some hit good soil, take root, and grow.
When the Word of God falls upon you, what happens? Do your day-to-day distractions snatch it away almost before you hear it? Does it stir you up with a quick burst of energy that is gone by Monday morning? Is your faith just one among the many concerns and obligations of your life?
Or is your life truly “good soil” in which the Word of God can be implanted, take root, grow, and bear good fruit?
This weekend as we gather in worship, we will center the service around “The Gospel of the Green Thumb” and consider the many places the Bible uses plants as a metaphor for growth. See you in church!
Grace and Peace,
