Campbell UMC Update for September 10th

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 by campbellumc

Worship for September 14th

This Sunday Melissa will be continuing the journey of Generation Xodus with “The Journey of a LIFEtime.”  The scripture reading is from Exodus 14:19-31.  This week’s ‘pre-reading’ is Exodus 13.  Stacy Crossen will be singing in the 8:20 and 10:50 services (and, of course playing on the NEW piano – more on this below) and the Praise Band will provide music at the 9:30 a.m. service.

Pastor’s Note – Melissa.

I am taking part in a fantasy football league. The unusual part of this statement is – I know nothing about football. Seriously, you would not find me sitting in my recliner on a Sunday afternoon watching a game – however, that is about to change.

I found myself this morning during hospital visits wanting to yell “go team” to a woman wearing a Patriots sweatshirt (Tom Brady is the quarterback for my fantasy football team). I can now tell you which player is probably going to play this weekend in spite of his hurt foot. A teammate stepped on it with cleats while he was wearing socks during a run. Couldn’t tell you if it is my running back or my wide receiver. (It is the first week).

I feel pretty good about my team. It was an automatic draft and I just let the cards fall where they would. And it worked out well for me, I think.  (Remember I don’t know much about football.)

This is an interesting thought process since I am in the middle of Philosophy of Religion and reading about God’s interaction with humanity. Does God interact? How much free will do we have? Is it all about a flip of the card and a spin of the wheel? I don’t have all the answers to those questions (it is only the first week of class).

Yet, I believe God does guide us. As the pillar of cloud and fire guided the Israelites in the book of Exodus – I believe God guides me. Sometimes I am not always following, but that is a whole different issue. So, I will leave my fantasy football team – the Groundhogs up to fate, but my life is in God’s hands.

Join us this coming Sunday as we continue on this journey of a LIFEtime with the Israelites.

Blessings Generation Xodus, Melissa

What’s New around Campbell?

Well, the new Piano is not quite brand-new anymore as it got quite a workout last Sunday evening at the fundraiser concert.  If you were not able to attend, you missed quite a performance by a variety of artists.  Almost 300 people were in attendance and we raised about $8,000!  The balance remaining to pay off the piano is a paltry $1,200!  Thank you Campbellites!  Your generosity is simply amazing; there’s no way we could have gotten this far so fast without your help!

Campbell Connect Update.

The first session of Campbell Connect starts tonight – most likely you’ve already missed it.  But, you have not missed out on any of the exciting classes that start next Wednesday (Sep 17th).  You can sign up for:

Sermon Connect with Andy Bryan and go in depth on Sunday’s sermon.

College Connect for young adults (about college age) with Kory Wilcox and study the book of Luke.

Marriage Connect, making God the center of your marital relationship with David and Julie Peck.

Media Connect with Rev. Steve Johnson looks at popular movie themes and Christianity.

Youth Connect for those in 6th through 12th grades starts at 3:30 with some “Barn Time” followed by Bible Study at 6:30.

Kid Connect for kid’s age 3 through 2nd grade will get shipwrecked as they explore the life of Paul.

Tween Connect for 3rd thru 5th graders will spend time studying the scary, gross and weird stories from the Bible.

Creative Connect has Alice Dodd taking on all comers (neophytes to professionals) in the knitting class – which is really more about having a good time than making an Afghan!

Choir Connect has the two Campbell choirs practicing at 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. If you can carry any sort of a tune come on down to the Sanctuary and sing along with Betty.

Walking Connect is an opportunity for those who don’t want to sit in class but want to share the spirit of fellowship by taking a walkabout through the neighborhoods surrounding Campbell.

Sustenance Connect is food for the body.  The classes will help feed your spirit but we’re also giving you a chance, at 5:30 p.m., to partake in a great meal prepared by our Small Wonders chef, Teresa Weiner.  Cost is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 11 and under.  (Please sign up for dinner in the Hospitality Room to help us with our food purchases.)

What’s New on the Website?

We’ve added an audio player for sermons and music.  You’ll find is located below the title of the audio file.  Start up the built-in player by clicking on the arrow.  You can download the audio file by placing your mouse cursor on the file name and saving it to your hard disk.  (Note:  different web browsers and operating systems have their own quirks so we cannot provide detailed instructions here.  If you have a question, send an email to Art Irish, the ‘tech guy’ and he’ll try to assist.)

The Small Wonders Parent Handbook has been updated and is now on the CamBlog (here).  You can download the handbook and print it at home or you can read the text of the handbook on-line.

What’s Happening?  The Campbell Calendar has a complete listing of all activities.

Sunday, September 21st is “BAF Sunday!”  BAF is short for “Bring A Friend” but it can also be a relative or co-worker or your neighbor you’d like to get to know better!

The second session of photography for the Campbell Picture Directory starts on Monday, September 22nd!  If you have not yet signed up to have your picture taken for the directory we suggest you do so now.  You can sign up using your home (or work) computer HERE.  If you don’t have a computer you can use the computer kiosk in the Hospitality Room when you are in church.  Any member of the staff can assist you with the signup process if you get stuck.  We want everyone to be in the directory so please sign up.  Olan Mills is giving away a free 8×10 photo with each sitting and offers packages for purchase at a discount from their usual pricing.
