Worship for September 21st.
This Sunday we continue with the journey of Generation Xodus with Andy Bryan telling us that “Faith Has a Flipside.” The Israelites are on the move and again, they are tested and also complain to Moses. And again, God comes to their aid. The scripture for this Sunday is Exodus 17:1-17. The scripture reading for this week is Exodus 18. Yes, we know that’s ‘reading ahead.’ You’ll find out why this Sunday. Come hear the Campbell Choirs sing to the tune of the (paid off) piano!
The last Sunday of June was my first Sunday in the pulpit at Campbell United Methodist Church. Here we are, coming up to the last Sunday of September – three months as the pastor of this extraordinary congregation. My, how time flies when you’re having fun!
Pausing to look back at those three months, I am kind of overwhelmed by everything that has happened. This congregation is alive! It’s buzzing with energy and excitement. Ministries for all ages are in place and going well. Worship services are filled with smiling faces and a sense of fellowship. We are reaching out, inviting, serving the community, serving the world. Looking over the long list of ministries and the huge numbers of people involved with them in a meeting recently, one team member was able to respond only with a stunned, “Holy Crimeny.”
(I’m not completely sure of the spelling of that expression, but if you are wondering, Kristi Hamilton would love to talk with you about it.)
The wonderful part of it is that all of this activity is happening with a common sense of purpose. It’s not chaos, even though it seems like it sometimes! Like the Israelites in “Generation Xodus,” all that we do is guided by the journey on which we find ourselves. It is a journey that we call faith, and sometimes it feels a bit like we are wandering rather aimlessly. Sometimes we get hungry. Sometimes we get thirsty. Sometimes we even wonder if God is there or not.
But then we wake up the next day and find that once again manna has fallen in the wilderness. Once again, clean water flows from a rock. And then, with God before/behind/around us, we take the next step. The life of a congregation is a journey that has both seasons of great momentum and seasons of repose. The good news is that God is there for the whole journey – every single moment of it.
I sense a season of great momentum in the life of Campbell United Methodist Church. I sense the motor revving up, ready for launch. I can see it in people’s eyes; I can hear it in the worship music; I can sense it in the dedication of the staff; I can tell when I’m talking to the children. You know something good is happening when the children are excited about coming to church!
And so I’m going to pause briefly and look back on these past three months, the beginning of my own journey as one of the pastors here, and celebrate. But I’m not going to linger there. There is a new day, there is manna on the ground, God is with us, and it is time to go! Let’s take the next step on this extraordinary journey.
Grace and Peace, Andy B.
What’s New around Campbell?
There’s progress on the new sign! There are some holes dug and electrical wiring is being installed (a big thanks to Chris Upp and JJ Cybulski). We are hoping that as the week continues there will be more visible progress culminating in an actual sign! Keep your eyes peeled for the sign to go up shortly!!
Thanks to everyone who donated to the Piano Fund. We collected more than enough money to pay off the piano. The additional monies will be used to purchase a humidity device that will help to preserve the piano for years to come. A list of special donations is in this week’s newsletter.
