This week our Easter celebration continues with Confirmation Sunday. This year’s class will be confirmed in one special worship service at 10:00 a.m. What a wonderful opportunity to gather together as a congregation, to share in worship, to welcome new brothers and sisters in Christ, and to have fellowship with one another.
Confirmation is an awesome moment in a congregation’s life together! The event is called “Confirmation” because it confirms or verifies something – namely, the living presence of the Spirit of Christ in the lives of those being confirmed.
The church has a chance to look at a group of young people and say, “YES!”
YES – Christ is with you!
YES – You are a child of God!
YES – We are all in God’s family here!
1 John 3:1 says, “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.” Isn’t that great? The reason that we are called children of God is because “that is what we are.” That is Confirmation in a sentence.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he says “You are the salt of the earth…” and “You are the light of the world.” A more accurate (if no more elegant) translation would be, “Y’all are the salt…” and “Y’all are the light…” because the Greek word for “you” is in the plural form. In other words, living as God’s salt and light is a group effort, a community endeavor. And this Sunday we celebrate community, our common identity as the body of Christ.
What a Sunday this will be! Our District Superintendent, Rev. Dwight Chapman, will be here to preach and to help confirm our class. The combined Chancel and Daybreak Choirs have a wonderful anthem prepared. The Youth Praise Band will share special music. The Children’s Ensemble will sing a great anthem. The Campbell Praise Band will be rocking the house. WOW! You are not going to want to miss this one!
Come and say “YES” to the family of God!
See you in church,
